This a recap of New World Episode 1 with my own fun twist and point of view woven in... it contains MAJOR spoilers if you haven't seen it yet. You have been warned!
We start the episode with two crazy people (one man and one woman) running and jumping off the edge of a skyscraper. We know they are crazy because they are jumping off the edge of a skyscraper. Fortunately they have parachutes, but they freefall for awhile before using them and Hello, they are RIGHT over a busy intersection… Do you really want to survive a free fall from the top of a skyscraper just to get hit by a car?
Anyway, the woman lands safely in a tiny patch of grass beside the road, but the man (apparently named Jack) is now nowhere in sight. She looks up into the sky and uses her walkie-talking to ask, "Are you down?" Because she thinks maybe he fell in slow-mo? Grew wings and flew away?
And indeed Jack is on the ground, but his parachute is somewhat tangled up in a pterodactyl's claw and that's certainly not good news for him. Jack screams and the scene switches to the main Primeval title screen and you know the pteradactyl killed him (so not so nice as the one in the original series that only kills lizards?) We feel very sorry for him but, you know, he was jumping off a skyscraper onto a busy traffic intersection so that's sorta testing fate in itself, don't ya think?
In the next scene we meet Drake and inventor Evan who are using a device to search for an anomaly. Evan complains that they keep missing the anomaly as apparently anomalies in Vancouver only stay open for a couple of minutes, unlike the ones in Britain. Drake says it's his fault because he is slowing Evan down, but Evan says that no, they're in this together. Drake thinks he's getting to old for this work. They leave and go to get a drink (single malt) and we get our first glimpse of our very own Connor Temple spying on them from behind a tree.
Scene Switch:
We see Drake examining the body of Jack the Parachuter and they say it's an animal attack but they want to know what kind of an animal could do such damage. My spell-checker tells me that Parachuter is not a word… so if you know what to call a person who parachutes, please let me know. Dylan shows up and saves Drake's life by bringing him coffee, or so he says. Dylan is the predator control specialist who deals with predatorial animals… so basically our Abby Maitland of the new team though she's got a bit of Jenny-like personality mixed in there for sure and so far, no kickboxing.
Drake and Dylan are coworkers apparently but Dylan seems to be more of the expert and Drake hands off the body examinations to her. It's determined that this is the worst mauling the team has ever seen and they conclude that it couldn't be a bear in that part of town (Um… how long have the writers spent in Vancouver? Yes, bears wander into the city sometimes… but what do I know, I only live around here…) Dylan doesn't buy it either but she has another reason it couldn't be a bear: bears are territorial and this kill was predatorial or something like that. It's also couldn't be a cougar because big cats attack at the neck and that's the only part of the body the pterodactyl didn't go for (and we wonder why not). Dylan comes to the conclusion that he was a jumper attacked in the air, due to the fact that he is wearing a parachute, but Drake says it would take an eagle the size of a jet to do that and so the scene ends.
Now we see Evan again and he's driving along in his car when a motorcycle appears beside him and starts doing wheelies the entire way to their office. The motorcyclist is our security specialist Mac who turns out to be more of a Danny than a Becker (and not just because Mac is played by an actor named Danny…) Mac is a motorcycling trickster daredevil in black leather with the British flag on the back of his helmet.
Evan says he can rate Mac's motorcycling display 7/10 and Mac is disappointed that he doesn't rate higher. Turns out it's because Evan has seen him do a reverse bunnyhop on the bike and now that he knows what Mac is capable of, he doesn't rate higher unless he does it again. WHY are we not shown this trick? Hello?
They check into the building and Evan asks Mac if he enjoys the job still, which seems somewhat of a random question to ask your coworkers as they arrive at work. Maybe I'll try that today when my coworkers arrive to see what they say. "Hey, you still enjoying your job here?" That oughta scare them. Oh, back to the show… Mac says "Sure, it's all good." He complains the job is pretty boring but it comes with beer and lift tickets so he's not complaining (Where do they work? For the British fans, most Canadian jobs do not involve drinking beer on the ski slopes… and I work in a hockey rink...)
In fact, Mac happens to owe Evan a beer or twenty. What bet did he lose? So much missing info here. Evan tells Mac to follow him as he's got a different job for Mac, working more for him. He has an assignment for Mac (Helping track anomalies since Drake is too old, maybe?) but before he tells Mac the assignment, his phone rings and the name that pops up reveals that it's Ange. Evan asks Mac to answer the phone for him.
Mac answers the phones and is telling Ange that sorry, she missed Evan so she can't talk to him when Ange herself appears around the corner and approaches them. Ange (short for Angelica) is Evan's long time friend who has a personality like Claudia's and dresses like Jess. Mac hangs up the phone and tells her she has perfect timing as Evan's now back (he'd never left). Ange complains that she's called Evan five times today and Evan tells her that it was actually six.
Ange turns to Mac and asks him, "Shouldn't you be guarding something?" Since he is the security specialist, the answer is probably 'yes', but Evan interrupts and says that he's just promoted Mac to the Special Projects Group. Mac looks happy but Ange demands to know what Mac is going to be doing exactly and Evan replies with the obvious, "Special Projects."
Ange lets the subject drop and accuses Evan of missing some conference type thing. She asks Evan to start focusing his genius ideas on his business and Evan replies that he prefers if Ange handles all that. Ange doesn't look overly impressed, but Evan changes the subject quickly now and tells her that he and Drake got a glimpse of an anomaly in the park. Ange thinks he's spending too much time on his anomaly-chasing pet project. Evan tells her that's what the money from the business is for, and Ange argues that if he doesn't spend more time on the business (whatever the business is, I'm not sure…) he won't have money left for his pet project because he'll lose his company.
Scene Change:
Evan is showing Mac around the more secret parts of the building and he introduces Mac to a girl named Toby. (Does anyone else think of the popular singer when he says "Toby Mac"? haha) Toby is the team's physics specialist and she's currently studying something in her lab. She glances at Mac and says that she's seen him at the reception desk before and sarcastically compliments his leather outfit, but you can tell she's not overly impressed.
Mac asks where they are, and Evan welcomes him to "Special Projects". Then he tells Toby that he's hired Mac full time to be in the field chasing anomalies. He tells Toby that the anomaly in Stanley Park opened again and she replies that that's three times in one week. Seems it always opens up in a slightly different location. Toby asks if that means she can finally set up her local network and Evan says yes, he just has to clear the budget with Ange. He tells Toby and Mac to go to the park and cover the west side of it and he'll cover the east and wants to know if they have any questions.
Mac does have a question actually. He asks the obvious, "What's an anomaly?"
Toby explains it to him as being a "Radiant Magnetic Event with a Rapid Rate of Intrepid" Eh? What ever happened to the original series definition of "Big Ball of Flickering Light that Doubles as a Doorway through Time?" Only I guess she can't say that because she *SPOILER ALERT* doesn't know it's a doorway through time yet. But still, "Magnetic Ball of Light" would do just fine.
Toby then continues on that the anomalies are harder to catch than roadrunners. My guess is that it's probably even harder, since roadrunners are rarer than bears in Vancouver.
Evan tells Mac not to worry and he'll explain it to him later. Probably a good thing as I'm sure he's still not got the foggiest what it is, and personally I think a full-time anomaly chaser should.
Evan and Toby start leaving and Mac just stands there staring at a wall until they turn around and ask if he's coming. He says he wouldn't miss it and follows them out.
Scene Change:
Two bikers are going for a bike ride in Stanley Park and they ride under a bridge and you hear screaming that can only mean one or both of them were both eaten by a dinosaur.
Scene Change:
Toby is up a tree zap strapping a video camera to the branches. She asks Mac if it's two visible and he takes awhile to answer because he's busy staring at her butt. Finally he responds that the camera is too "glinty" so she tells him get her some dirt and stop staring at her. He apologizes and gives her a handful of dirt and I add the word "glinty" to my vocabulary.
Scene Change:
We're back at the lab and here's Connor again! He's doing something brilliant as always and manages to steal all the passcodes of the swipe key so that he has full access to everywhere. Then he breaks in to the staff room and haves himself a look around. He's got some sorta tracker thing in his hand.
Scene Change:
Back in Stanley Park, Mac asks Toby about the network she's setting up and she tells him that her device thing can pinpoint an anomaly to within a metre. Then she asks how he applied for the new Special Projects job if he doesn't know what it is. Mac explains that he didn't, Evan just handed it to him, just like he hired him in the first place for the security job.
Toby glances at him and sighs that she guesses there must be more to him than what meets the eye, and Mac promises her that that is the case. She scoffs and hides a smile.
Scene Change:
Connor is snooping around upstairs now and his device goes ballistic inside Evan's office. It leads him to a photograph of a woman (Is that Ange or someone else?) that is framed on Evan's desk and inside the frame, Connor finds a broken anomaly detector (I think that's what it is).
He takes the device and then leaves, but runs into Ange on the way out. She asks who he is and he makes her repeat the question. Then he replies that he's there about the internet. He says he had a report that it is slow. Ange agrees that it is very slow, painfully so and Connor's face lights up and says that he might know what's wrong with it and Ange agrees to get someone from security to give him access to it so he can fix it. Connor makes something up about having to get his "Crimper" from his car first and that he'll meet the security person in the lobby later, so Ange lets him leave the building walks away and Connor yells after her that he's "happy to be of service with fixing the internet of it's being slow."
Next we see Evan setting up security cameras on his side of the park and suddenly Dylan appears and she's got a tranq gun with her. Evan says he's not a bear so he'd prefer not to be shot actually. Dylan apologizes and asks what Evan's doing and he says he's just collecting golf-balls. He's not. He reads from Dylan's uniform that she's part of the predator control team and asks if she knows Drake and says that he and Drake are old friends.
Dylan introduces herself and Evan says that Drake has talked about her before. Dylan says Drake has never talked about Evan to her and Evan says that Drake has his priorities straight then. He asks her if they have many predators around Stanley Park and she says No, so then Evan asks her if there's been some sort of attack to bring her there. She can't tell him so he rightly guesses that means yes. Dylan asks Evan if he's seen anything unusual and he says no, but just then they hear a growl in the bushes. Dylan asks if Evan brought friends with him and he says "Not eight foot tall ones" as the trees start to shake. And really, if Evan's friends are sitting around growling in the bushes, well, that'd just be weird I think. Dylan and Evan decide that now would be a good time to leave.
Dylan says she's going to call the team in, and Evan asks if she could call just Drake. Her cellphone isn't working though due to interference (ANOMALY!?) And it does this weird thing where all the numbers float up to the corner… I don't have a mobile but even I know that looks crazy wrong. Evan gets excited because he knows it's a spike of magnetism and that means an anomaly. Dylan gives him a strange look because no one should be so excited about magnets. Evan goes running off with his detector he's pulled from his pocket and Dylan chases after him.
Dylan and Evan find the anomaly under the bridge and Dylan also finds the helmets of the two bikers that had disappeared while Evan studies the anomaly. Dylan asks if it's dangerous and Evan says yeah and tells her to stand close to him so she does.
Evan is taking pictures of the anomaly and Dylan glances over his shoulder and sees… a UtahRaptor! Think velociraptor with a feather duster for a tail. We realise at this point that Helen Cutter is blind because the Utahraptor is most definitely NOT the spitting image of James Lester as she claimed in episode 1.4 of the original series. For one thing, Lester doesn't even have a tail. The raptor chases Dylan and Evan through the anomaly where they wide up lying on the ground, but quicly get up when they realised they've time travelled and the Utahraptor has followed them.
The anomaly pulses behind them and Evan grabs Dylan and pulls her back into the 21st century just as it closes, leaving the utahraptor where it belongs. Dylan asks what is going on and Evan replies he doesn't know, but they definitely went through it. Dylan seems to have figured this out on her own, smart girl, and says "Yeah, but to where?" Evan doesn't know. Dylan asks Evan if he can explain any of it and he tells her he's working on it and that she should come with him. Behind them we see another utahraptor run across the path and then head for the anomaly, and then just stand there looking at a loss under the bridge when it finds the anomaly is gone.
End Scene:
Now we're back at the labs (which are called the TANK I believe… Canadian version of the ARC). Toby, Mac, Dylan and Evan are there looking at the photos that Evan took of the anomaly. The pictures aren't the clearest and Evan says that's because they can't use a good camera since they don't work so well next to a "large scale magnetic event."
Dylan looks at him like he's crazy and says "Uhhh… large scale magnetic event? It was a doorway to somewhere." Evan agrees that it's a doorway through time, in a much more scientific manner of speaking.
Toby looks at him in awe as she says that he finally tracks this thing down and it spits out dinosaurs?!" She's really excited to see the photos of the utahraptor and thinks they are totally cool. Evan reminds her that they are also dangerous. Mac asks where the raptor is now and Evan says the anomaly closed with it on the other side, but they don't know there's another one, and a pterodactyl.
Ange walks into the room and says she got Evan's text and they should fill her in. Then she asks who Dylan is and Dylan and Ange introduce themselves to each other. Evan shows Ange the photos and she's amazed that the anomalies are real and she's in complete awe of the photos too. By the way, what was the final British cover story and how does the whole world not know they are real after convergence?
Evan says something about their research starting and Ange is like "starting? Wait a minute, I thought finding them was the end of this?!" but before Evan can talk himself out of this one, Dylan turns to Evan is like, "Wait, you've seen these before?" He gives a vague answer of "Kinda," but the girls aren't done making him squirm yet as Toby chips in with, "Wait a minute? You knew these were time portals?" Evan says he didn't know anything but he promises he'll figure it out.
Ange is concerned about lawyers and liability and thinks they should report the anomalies to the proper authorities. Evan asks who that would be. Dylan says that Ange is right, she has to report it, so Evan says that Dylan can call Drake. Then he dials and tells Drake that Dylan knows about the anomalies and hands Dylan the phone.
Drake tells Dylan over the phone that he's been following fresh tracks since that morning. Dylan tells Evan that Drake is tracking something right now and hands Evan the phone back. Drake tells Evan that he is near a skytrain service tunnel and Evan tells Drake to wait for them.
Then Dylan, Mac, and Evan take off to go help Drake.
We see Drake standing at the tunnel entrance getting his tranq gun ready when someone screams inside. Drake bravely runs forward to help/takes a couple shuffled steps and sneaks a peak inside.
In the car Mac is driving and Dylan tries to get him to go faster. Mac says he can only go faster on his bike and Dylan and Evan give him annoyed looks.
Drake goes down some stairs and we see the utahraptor tracking him.
In the car, Dylan asks Evan what he thinks Drake has found, and Evan says he hopes it is nothing.
Drake (and the stalkerish Utahraptor) come across a dead body that has been mauled by a creature. Drake phones Evan and tells him about the body and Evan and Dylan tell Drake to get out of the area, but it is too late and *SPOILER ALERT* the Utah Raptor attacks Drake and kills him. Okay, I know this is Primeval and main characters die off all the time, but WOAH first episode isn't even done yet, isn't that a bit soon? Dylan especially is really shaken by Drake's death. The boss of the predator team place asks Dylan if she wants someone else to examine the body, but she says no and does it herself.
While she is examining the body, suddenly Connor pops up out of nowhere and starts talking to Evan. Evan asks who Connor is, and Connor says it's better if Evan doesn't know. Then Connor holds up the broken detector thing that he stole from inside Evan's photo frame and asks if Evan recognizes it. Evan's like "Yeah, it's mine!" Connor's like, "Not yet it's not!" and puts it back in his pocket. Evan asks Connor how he got it, and Connor doesn't answer but says that he wants Evan to listen to his advice. Then he tells Evan that Evan thinks he's rewriting the laws of physics and making the world a better place, but he's not and he better leave it alone because the stuff he's messing with is too powerful.
Evan asks Connor what causes the anomalies and how to stop them. Connor says they are a natural force and you can't. He says that you make things worse if you don't leave them alone. Evan says he can't do that and Connor's like "Well, yeah you can!" Evan says that someone has to deal with the creatures and Connor says yeah, he's not arguing that, just don't touch the anomalies because they are kryptonite. Evan says okay and asks Connor to help him, and Connor says he can't and that he's breaking the official secrets act by even talking to Evan at all. Evan gets upset and doesn't care about the secrets act because people are dead, including his best friend (he points at Drake's body).
Connor explains that he's sorry that happened, but no one can know about the dinosaurs because tourists and mass panics mean more dead people and that is just not cool. Evan says that Connor's gonna have to give him more than "Not cool" as a reason. Personally I thought the dead people were good enough reason but whatever. Connor tells Evan that the creatures are "loose threads" and that if you pull the wrong thread "history unravels", so that Evan needs to just put all the creatures back where they come from. Evan's like, "You say that like it's so easy," And Connor's like, "Oh no, it's not easy, not even a little bit!"
Then Mac notices them talking and comes over, so Connor takes off with a quick wish of "Good luck" to Evan. Evan yells after Connor that his reasons still aren't enough, and Connor yells back that it'll have to be.
Mac asks Evan what that was about and Evan says, "Good question." Then Dylan approaches and says the wounds don't match the wounds of the parachute guy and she thinks he was a bird prey, not a raptor and they determine something else is out there.
Dylan's boss approaches and says there was another possible attack in Stanley Park and that a little kid is missing and Dylan goes with him. Evan tells Mac to tell Toby to meet them at the park as he thinks he knows where to find the creatures and he heads off too.
End Scene:
Back at the TANK, Ange is walking around barefoot and talking to someone named Rita on the phone. She tells Rita not to laugh and that she's not wearing a tinfoil hat, but she needs to get in touch with someone who is in charge of stuff like UFO's. Then she gets all defensive and says that no, she is not having issues with little green men and does not watch Star Trek, she just really needs to know who handles this sorta thing.
The scene cuts and Ange is walking down the hall of a somewhat deserted government facility. She goes to the office that the mysterious Rita must have sent her too and the door magically opens for her. The office hasn't been used in awhile obviously as it's just a stack of chairs and desks and almost looks like it belongs in an episode of Hoarders.
There is, however, one guy here with a private office and window coverings that match the ones in my living room. He jumps up all happy to meet Ange and introduces himself as Lieutenant Ken Leeds. Turns out he's the head of the department that investigates alien life and the anomalies too, only the department was decommissioned like 60 years ago, so Ken's a little bored now and we wonder how the hell does a guy who looks to be in his late 30's get a job that was decommissioned 60 years ago?
Ken is probably this series' Lester. He dresses like Lester and has all the high up contacts like Lester, but his personality is more a combination of early Connor and Jess.
Ange is slightly concerned because the office, which is known as the headquarters for "Project Magnet" is pretty much her worst nightmare. Ken explains how Project Magnet was formed in 1950 and then shut down in 1954, except for his job of course. Then he tells her that he's been keeping a file on Evan for five years now and Ange is like "What?"
Then Evan says he's pulled up the tax returns for Evan's business and summarized from them that Evan's found what he's looking for. Ange is like that's it, I'm outta here, but Ken assures her that he can help her with her alien threat.
Ange is like, "There's no aliens, they are dinosaurs." And Ken is like "Noted."
Ken tells Ange that since she's talking to him, she's obviously at the bottom of her barrel and out of all options, so she'd better trust him and he'd be her shining light at the end of the rabbit hole tunnel and the last port in her storm of hopelessness and despair or something like that. He's totally ready to help Evan cross kick some alien behind.
Prehistoric behind, Ange corrects as she takes him up on the offer.
Scene Switch Time.
We're back at Stanley Park and Evan asks Dylan if the kid is still missing. She says yes and the kid's name is Trevor. Then she says that she has full access to the Park but the rest of the team don't. Well that sucks.
Dylan says the police think that a bear is responsible for the attacks and that it's still in the park. Mac points out that it's not a bear, and Dylan expresses her concern that 50 police officers are about to walk into that park where the predator is still at large.
Evan makes s phone call to Ange who makes a phone call to Ken who uses his ties to get everyone out of the park and get the full team full access and promises to think up a cover story for the police. Then he asks if she wants the reporters to get called off by their editors or if she wants him to get them all locked up, but decides on just having them called off. Then he opens up a super secret briefcase that, unlike the Admiral's second in command's in the original series ep 5.2, contains a sandwich along with his list of contacts.
And to further prove that this office is old… Oh My Gosh is he using a DIAL telephone? Yes I think he is. Whoever he's phoning on it, he speaks in code to, introducing himself as "The Weatherman reporting a Stormfront."
The results of his call are "outstanding", and Dylan's friends get clearance to help with the search for Trevor.
Mac starts unpacking a bunch of tranq guns and Dylan asks where he got them. Mac says he took them from the back of Drake's truck and he's sure that Drake would've wanted them to have them. They each take one, but they are just single shot guns. Toby stays with the vehicles and talks to them through walkie-talkie.
Mac goes one way, and Evan and Dylan another way. Evan thanks Dylan for all her help and she says she's not doing it for him. Well that was kinda rude? It's not like they were fighting or anything.
Suddenly they hear someone calling for help over the walkie-talkie and it is Trevor who has picked up their signal. He asks Evan to get his dad and Evan says yes, but he has to know where Trevor is first. Trevor says he's lost and they promise to come find him. He asks Trevor what he can see near him, and Trevor says he sees the monster. We then see that Trevor is trapped in the pteradactyl's nest with the creature itself hovering over his head and a human arm (the parachuters) beside him.
Mac, Evan and Dylan all run for him and Mac reaches Trevor first from behind the nest. He tells Evan that he sees "The One With The Wings" in a hushed tone. Evan asks if he sees Trevor there too, so Mac takes another peek and says yes. Evan and Dylan reach the nest from the front side and they shoot it, but the tranquilizer doses aren't high enough and Dylan says it could take a few minutes to have an effect. Big Bird doesn't seem to notice he's been shot. Evan isn't going to wait a few minutes since the bird is hovering over Trevor, so he runs toward the next and the bird comes after him.
Mac sees that Evan is in trouble, so he runs up from behind yelling "Hey Big Nose!" and Evan grabs Trevor out of the nest while the bird's back is turned. Dylan loads another dart and tries shooting it again when the pterodactyl goes after Evan and Trevor once more. Finally though, just before it catches them, the dosage works and it falls to the ground unconscious.
Everyone is happy and safe and relieved for all of two seconds until the second Utahraptor appears and attacks Evan and Trevor from behind. They stand there and stare at it blankly and not shooting and somehow the pterodactyl wakes itself up and attacks the raptor for them. It wins and then falls back asleep on top of it. Who knew that half-asleep and mostly unconscious pterodactyl could win so easily in a fight against an angry raptor?
Scene changes to Mac and Toby lugging in the creature bodies on pallet jacks to the lab's freezer. Mac is telling Toby what happened and Evan tells Mac that the pterodactyl is a female because she was making a nest. They are all standing around in the freezer and Toby wants to know why they are freezing the creature bodies if they aren't going public… and more importantly why does she have to be down here freezing.
Evan says that the creatures are too important to destroy and they have to keep them until they can return them home safely. Mac says that they'd better make sure no one comes poking around the building then. Evan says that this part of the building is off the map and they should keep it that way.
Then Toby takes Mac by the arm and says to him, "Come on, New Guy, I'm gonna show you how to use the super secret coffee maker, and they leave Evan to himself in the freezer.
Then the show gets seriously weird as we see Evan's thoughts and flashbacks and memories of an earlier anomaly he had discovered and an Albertosaurus chasing him and some girl, killing the girl, and himself being saved by someone wearing Connor's ARC coat and carrying the detector Connor had come to get from Evan's office. We think it might be Connor, except Evan's flashbacks stop and we see that he has the man in the ARC coat (that still looks like Connor) Frozen and preserved in his freezer in a big block of ice? What the heck? And with that, the episode ends.
