What started as a fun hunt for a Lycaenops, quickly became the darkest and saddest episode so far.
It was great to see the four main team members working so well together for the first half of the episode; it finally felt like this series had its crew together. They were all able to share some jokes, even in dangerous situations, and knew that they could trust one another to watch their backs. It was only a matter of time before something happened to mess that up.
Sadly, it didn't take long and before we knew it two people were dead, and their loss will shake the foundations of this group for a long time. Everyone was affected in their own ways, but it was obvious that Mac and Evan are taking it the hardest. These two were great friends, but now everything is undone. Evan obviously didn't think it would get this bad when he was warned how dangerous Anomaly chasing could get.
I wouldn't be surprised if this marks the beginning of a change that brings Project Magnet right into the business. Ange was trying to get them to take over, but now Evan will likely understand that they need a lot more help than just their small crew.
Miranda Frigon singing her song "Hiding Place", which will be available on iTunes soon, made the moment at the end feel so much more personal too. Having an actor on the series who is also a talented singer allow these types of events to have so much more feeling than it would have otherwise.
The effects on the Lycaenops was amazing, which seems to be a standard for this series. They were incredibly terrifying in appearance, especially since it moved so realistically. Coming across one of these in the wild would be a true nightmare.
Fans of the original series may have noticed that this creature is smaller than that the Gorgonopsids that showed up a few times over the years. Gorgonopsids are a family of Therapsids, which range in size and appearance. Those were likely Inostrancevia or a Gorgonops, which are much larger in size.
Not only did this episode have the fun exploration that we have come to expect from this series, but it also did an amazing job at shaping the main characters with events that will shake the foundations for the entire team. It also showed that no one is safe in this series, which I am glad to see since the original series wasn't shy about killing off characters.
So far Primeval: New World has done a fantastic job at keeping with what made the original series great, while adding a gritty realism to the story and characters at the same time.
